It's been a while

...since I posted last.

What has happened since? A lot, yet not much. The Reds re-signed Joey Votto (no surprise to me) and they're shaping up to be the same team as last year. Dusty Baker said that Chapman won't move to the starting lineup, which I think is a good call...

Well, back to homework now. Hopefully I'll post more throughout spring training!

Bruce to wear wishbone C for six more years

Jay Bruce signed a six year deal worth $51 million today. The deal also has a seventh optional year and I couldn't be happier.

Last season, he hit .281 with 25 HRs and 70 RBIs. It's really great to see a top young player (Bruce is 23) stick around with a medium-market team.

No matter what happens with Bruce, no Reds fan will ever forget the walkoff.

Baker calls the Cards 'the favorite' in the NL Central

What?!?! This seems like a bad thing for a division-winning team manager to say about the upcoming season. Granted, the race last year was tight until the Cardinals collapsed and they have been making moves this offseason, but still. I don't know if he actually believes this or if he's just trying to trick everyone into thinking the Reds will be the underdogs again this year. Cmon Dusty.

He went on to say that the team wants to make moves to improve the team and not just for the sake of doing so

Harang signs with Padres

Aaron Harang signed with the San Diego Padres today. The one year deal is worth $4 million. I'm not surprised at all by the deal; he will turn 33 this year and seemingly had nothing left in the tank. He gave seven good years to the Reds and was consistent for most of them.

Harang is also from the San Diego area; it's always nice for a guy like that to spend his last years in the league close to home.

Arroyo re-signs through 2013

Pitcher Bronson Arroyo resigned with the Reds today. The deal hasn't been announced by the Reds yet (but will be at Redsfest, which is going on right now) and is apparently worth $35 million for three years.

Arroyo was definitely the most consistent starter this season, going 17-10 with a 3.88 ERA in his 33 starts. It seemed every day or night Arroyo was pitching the Reds were in a great position to win the game. He had control of his pitches day in and day out and stayed in games for 6 or 7 innings more often than not.

Former Red wins AL MVP

Former Red Josh Hamilton won the AL MVP last week. He won by a considerable margin; 22 first place votes to Miguel Cabrera's five. Hamilton had an impressive .359 BA, 32 HRs and 100 RBIs this season.

The scariest part about all of this is that the Reds only traded him away (for Edinson Volquez) two years ago. Two years! I cannot imagine Votto and Hamilton in the field together or even at the plate back-to-back. Wow.

Reds sign Willis to minor league deal

The Reds signed P Dontrelle Willis last Saturday to a minor league deal. The 28-year-old won 22 games in 2005 and finished second in the NL Cy Young balloting with the Marlins. He's trying to "resurrect" his career after suffering from anxiety attacks which effected his pitching.

If this guy turns out to be nothing for the Reds, so what. If he turns out to be great, which I'm not expecting, hooray.

Votto named NL MVP

Congratulations to Joey Votto, who was named National League MVP on Monday. Votto received 31 out of 32 first place votes and 164 more points than second-place Albert Pujols.

Votto absolutely deserved it this year. He finished first in OBP and slugging percentage, 2nd in batting average and third in home runs and RBIs in the league this year.

After the 7th inning, Joey won the Triple Crown with .356 BA, 14 HRs and 41 RBIs. That hasn't been done in the last 35 years.

Notable Reds MVPs: Larkin was the last to win it (1995) and they won 6 in the 1970s (Bench, Foster, Morgan, Rose)

Scott Rolen apparently told him the night they clinched, "We better win tonight, because you're going to win that MVP. And if we win tonight, you're going to thank me big."

The best part: Votto is Canadian. Why would this matter? Canadiens don't play nearly as much baseball as America children do, so every year Joey is figuring the game out more and more and continuing to improve on every aspect of his game.

Black wins NL Manager of the Year

San Diego Padres manager Bud Black was named National League Manager of the Year. Black was the guy who saw a 6.5 game lead go down the drain and lost 10 straight. The Padres went 14-17 from September 1 on and missed the playoffs. A lot of Reds fans are very bitter about Baker not getting the recognition he deserves. I'm not that offended by it all.

Here's a an article with a funny headline.

C Hernandez re-signs

The Reds re-signed C Ramon Hernandez yesterday. The one year deal is worth $3 million for the 34-year-old catcher.

I really like that they re-signed Hernandez. He may not be as good as Hanigan, but it seems he's always getting hits (and extra base hits) when he needs to. What I didn't know was that he started a team-high 85 games last season.

The trio behind the plate (Hernandez, Hanigan and Corky Miller) led the National League last year with 168 hits and a .296 batting average. Very impressive.
