Remembering Sparky Anderson

Sparky Anderson, one of the greatest Reds managers of all time, died yesterday. The day after his hiring, the Cincinnati newspaper headline read, "Sparky who?" During his 8 year tenure, the Reds won four pennants and earned the Big Red Machine nickname. The Reds were not successful because of their pitching, but rather because of their superstars at the plate and in the field like Joe Morgan, Pete Rose and Johnny Bench. Anderson was inducted into the Hall of Fame with a managerial record of 2,194-1,834.
